Knob weather with highs in the 80's with some rain. Our scouts
drank a lot of water and "bug juice" and finished many merit
badges. A Troop 451 camper won the second annual chess tournament

Summer
Tour-June
15
to
July
8,
2005 The summer trip this year
toured the South and West with many exciting highlights. The
first stop was Florida where the guys swam in the Gulf ahead of the
sharks, after which they looked into the aeronautical museum in
Pensacola. The next stop was Tinker Air Force base, where they
checked out the planes. New Orleans, Oklahoma City, and
Albuquerque were all stops on the road to the West. Next, the
group hiked the Grand Canyon from Rim to Rim and headed to Las Vegas
for some magic. Salt Lake City was another interesting spot and
the guys floated in the water. After a quick shower, they were
off to Wyoming.
The Grand Tetons offered spectacular mountains
scenery
and tough backpacking. Snow covered the northern sloops of the
mountains, which made trail hiking difficult. Consequently, the
group hiked out by way of Granite Canyon. Along the trial, they
saw wildlife and swam in a mountain stream before heading off to
Yellowstone. Old Faithful lived up to its reputation and, while
in the park, they saw buffaloes as well as a bear.
Devils Tower and The Black Hills were the next
destinations for the group. While in South Dakota, the
group toured Deadwood, hiked Haney Peak, and the visited the Crazy
Horse Indian Complex. One evening was very special as the group
watched the Independence Day fireworks form Mount Rushmore. The
village of Wall and the drugstore was the next stop.
Finally, they checked out the Badlands and headed East. They
stopped in Magnolia Minnesota for the evening.
Chicago was the next point of interest. The
guys toured the city via Sheridan Road and saw the waterfront,
Evanston, The Loop, City Hall, and the Science Museum. The guys
walked through U505, which is now underground. After some pizza,
they were off to a White Sox game.
The final destination was Cedar Point in Ohio, where
they spent the day on roller coasters. Like many adventures, the
summer tour was action packed and fun. View

First Class rank requirements with the Dragon and Golden Eagle
Patrols. We worked on Scout skills such as fire building, cooking
over an open fire, first aid, water rescue, and orienteering.
Proper care, sharpening, and use of the knife, saw and ax were
discussed. Scouts also learned about the Buddy System, Safe Swim
Defense, Safety Afloat, rules for safe hiking, their constitutional
rights, and their obligations as U.S. Citizens. In addition,
Scouts completed a five mile hike and went swimming in the lake.

2005, was Troop
451' s Camporee
weekend as we were the host Troop for this special event. Fifty
scouts and forty-one adults from the Troop directed the Camporee
activities. The rifle,
shotgun, BB gun, and archery ranges
were opened, as well as Camp Durant's new climbing tower and bouldering
wall. The BB gun range was particularly fun as scouts created
their own targets for shooting. The Camporee featured a potluck
dinner on
Saturday evening and singing at the campfire. The OA tapped out a
number of scouts who will begin their Ordeal soon. There were
over 350
district participants from Durham and all enjoyed a great weekend. District

Cycling
at Jamestown, VA from March 18-20, 2005 was a fun weekend as 15
Scouts and 5 adults camped at Camp Pipsico in Spring Grove, VA and
biked. On Saturday, we rode bicycles to Jamestown Settlement for
the 22nd Annual Military Through the Ages. The bicycle trip was
approximately 9 miles each way and included short rides across the
James River on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry.
Jamestown Settlement, a living-history museum of 17th Century Virginia,
offers a film gallery, exhibits, and outdoor recreations of a Powhatan
Indian village, an English fort, and full size replicas of the three
ships that brought America’s first permanent English colonists to
Virginia – Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery.
For the 22nd Annual Military Through the Ages, more than 200
re-enactors portrayed soldiers and military encounters throughout
history including the 1318 Scottish and English War, Hundred Years War,
War of the Roses, French and Indian War, American Revolution, War of
1812, American Civil War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam
War. Military re-enactors engaged in mock skirmishes and
presented tactical demonstrations. Scouts interacted with the
re-enactors and learned how uniforms, weapons, and military tactics
evolved throughout the centuries, as well as how soldiers were fed and
sheltered in times of war. Scouts particularly enjoyed the bullet
casting demonstration, firing of a medieval catapult, and the ship
replicas. View

| Priest
Wilderness
Backpacker - A group of eight Scouts
and adults spent the weekend of January 7-9, 2005 backpacking in the
Priest Wilderness
Area of the Washington National Forest in central Virginia.
Temperatures didn't approach the Troop record of -5
from last year, but it was still a great weekend for backpacking. The
hike began in fog at the lower elevations. As the hikers
continued up the mountain, they walked out of the fog and into warm
sunny weather, as the lower parts of the mountains were all covered in
clouds.
Despite the warmer weather, the campfire with fellow hikers from
Virginia was terrific. On the walk down the mountain, the
backpackers passed by Crabtree Falls. These Falls have some of
longest drops on the East Coast of the United States. |
